- When it fails, shut it down.
If your system isn't working, shut it down to avoid overheating or damage to other components from improper operation.
- Know your filter.
Know the size and keep a record of the most recent filter change or cleaning.
- Keep the paperwork.
Save all paperwork for future repair, warranty or sale reference.

Keep the area around your equipment clear. All HVAC systems have clearance requirements. Driftless's rule of thumb is 12 inches minimum around outdoor systems and 2 feet around indoor systems for safety and servicing.
- Respect the schedule.
Be confident with your professional maintenance schedule. Don't leave a crucial part of your home unchecked for years and expect it to be ready for extreme conditions.
